So this is the thing: it was time to change my life. I decided to change my focus from computers to animals. I wanted to go to vet school. It had been awhile since I was in school, so I took some science classes at the local community college and aced them. I moved on to Texas A&M University, aka 'Hell'. It was one of the worst experiences of my life. I flunked out of school, and ran home to Austin.
Time for more soul searching. I found myself watching reality medical tv on TLC. My sister and a friend had gone through some EMT training, and the idea just grew from there. I'm calm in emergencies and I like people. I like knowing what to do in a crisis. I'm smart and like making decisions. Austin has one of the best Emergency Medicine Programs in the country. It takes 2.5 semesters to complete, and there are also state certification exams involved.
I've just completed the first EMT class, and now have to pass the state exam. Then I can get a job in an ED (ER to non-medics) while I go to school in the Spring. In the Spring I'll apply to the Paramedic program. I have to take a sort of writing and math skills test, too.
Right now I'm waiting to hear word back from the Texas Department of Health Region 7 office. I keep checking their web site so I can schedule the test. It's been a week since I sent in my stuff. I'm also slowly running out of money, so I need to find an interim job or stop consuming food, electricity, and digital cable.
This will be a blog chronicaling my thoughts during this limbo time in my life, and maybe continuing on to my experiences as an ER Tech/Student. I have a good friend to whom I vent almost every day, but she doesn't read her email on her days off from work, and I think I'm leaning to heavily on her, anyway, so I will share with the anonymous world out there. If anyone would like to drop me an email, I would be deeply touched. =)
